You have a PoE Switch, but one device needs 60W and the switch only delivers 30W. You grab a midspan injector and wonder if you can simply daisy-chain it between the switch and the device. The short answer: sometimes, but only if you disable PoE on that switch port. Otherwise you risk two power sourcing equipment (PSE) fighting over the same cable—a scenario that can damage the injector, the switch, or the powered device.


The confusion is understandable. PoE Injectors and PoE Switches both perform the same basic job: they inject DC voltage onto Ethernet pairs. But the IEEE 802.3 standards never defined what happens when two PSEs are connected in series. There is no negotiation protocol for “who supplies the power.”


## Why two PSEs on one cable is a problem


An active PoE Switch port begins by probing for a 25 kΩ signature resistor. If it doesn’t find one, it assumes the connected device is not PoE-capable and leaves the power off. A standard midspan injector’s data input port does not present that signature—it is designed to receive data, not power. So in many cases, the switch will simply pass data and never energize the line. The injector then adds its own power downstream.


But that behavior is not guaranteed. Some switches offer a “force power” mode that bypasses detection and applies 48V regardless. Others use non-standard pinouts or legacy passive PoE. If the switch energizes the line while the injector also injects voltage, the two power sources can combine. Depending on the pinout and the injector design, the PD may see 70V or more—well above the 57V maximum allowed by IEEE 802.3. The result is often a burnt PD, a failed injector, or a switch port that never works again.


Passive injectors make this worse. They do not perform detection or classification. They simply put 48V on the spare pairs or data pairs, no questions asked. If your PoE Switch is also supplying power on those same pairs, you have a direct electrical conflict. We’ve seen this mistake in the field more than once: a technician tries to boost power by adding a passive injector to an already-active PoE port. The camera dies within seconds.


## When it can work safely


The safe scenario is simple: use a non-PoE Switch port, or disable PoE on the port you intend to use. Then connect that port to the injector’s input, and connect the injector’s output to the PD. The switch handles data only. The injector handles power only. There is no overlap.


Many managed switches allow per-port PoE disable through the web interface or CLI. If yours does, turn PoE off on that specific port before plugging in the injector. If your switch is unmanaged, check whether it has a physical PoE toggle or whether you can use an uplink port that is data-only. Some unmanaged switches have one or two non-PoE ports specifically for uplinking to another switch—those are ideal for this use case.


Another safe scenario: your switch does not support PoE at all. You are using it purely for data, and the injector provides power. This is the classic midspan deployment. It works reliably as long as the injector meets the PD’s power class and the cable distance stays within 100 meters.


What if you need higher wattage than your PoE Switch provides? You have two clean options. First, replace the switch with a higher-power model (802.3bt, up to 90W per port). Second, keep the existing switch but disable PoE on the relevant port and use an 802.3bt injector. Never try to “add” an injector on top of an active PoE port. 


## What to check before you plug in


Start with the injector’s datasheet. Does it explicitly state that the input port is isolated and will not accept PoE? Some industrial injectors include transformer isolation on the input, which protects against accidental PoE voltage. If that isolation is not documented, assume it is not there.


Next, confirm the PoE standard and pinout. An 802.3af injector uses Mode A or Mode B depending on the manufacturer. If your switch port is disabled, pinout doesn’t matter for power, but it still matters for data integrity. Mode A and Mode B both pass data correctly on standard Ethernet, but mismatched magnetics can cause link negotiation issues at 2.5G or 10G speeds.


Then verify the power budget. A 30W PD needs an injector rated for at least 30W at the output, plus headroom for cable loss. We typically recommend 20% overhead, so a 36W or 60W injector is safer. Also check the injector’s input voltage range. Some midspans expect 48V input from an external power brick, not from the Ethernet line.


Finally, measure before you connect. Use a multimeter on the switch port to confirm no voltage is present. If you see 48V, stop. Disable PoE or choose another port.


## Better alternatives for B2B deployments


If you are designing a new network, avoid daisy-chaining PSEs altogether. Use a PoE Switch with enough power per port for all your devices. If a few devices need more power than others, consider a hybrid approach: a standard PoE switch for low-power devices, and a separate midspan injector fed from a non-PoE port for the high-power ones.


For existing installations, the cleanest fix is to disable PoE on the port feeding the injector. If your switch does not support that, add a small non-PoE switch between the PoE switch and the injector. That non-PoE switch acts as a data-only buffer, preventing any power from reaching the injector’s input.
